Chanel has landed in Central Park. Rumsey Field in Central Park will host the Chanel Mobile Art exhibit until Nov 9th. No there is no #5 samples given out, just a portable pavilion designed by Zaha Hadid that houses the creative interpretations of what a chanel bag means to a selected group of artists. Selected by Karl Lagerfield, these pieces are on display for free. The only thing that it does require is your time to stand on line and wait. Chanel is never cheap.

It reminds you of Great Adventure in that you stand on line, to stand on another line, to go stand on yet another line. The day Artsy went, it started to drizzle a little, and the crew working there, dressed in black, had large Chanel umbrellas, which they did not give out and used on themselves. Sadly their windbreaker jackets did not keep them warm.

After waiting on lines, you were lead in 2 at a time, to control traffic. They checked your coat, and bag, yes handbag, as they did not want you taking any pictures, using your cell phone or talking to your toy dog that fits in your bag.

This is an audio tour, and the Zen mp3 player managed to snag the exclusive rights to it. They have different languages for you to listen in. English is spoken by a old lady, supposedly to be reminiscent of Coco. The tour itself, leads you around the structure, there are different forms, mediums, styles, sculptures, videos and interpretations. The audio tour tries to tell you where to go, however it does not take into account the speed at how some people walk in. Though it doesn’t matter as there are workers there every 3 feet it seems guiding you along.

A few things that stood out was walking towards the giant Chanel purse with a giant Chanel powder compact in it. The audio tour commands you to stop, and when you do, you can smell the old lady powder in the air. You can also watch the video in the compact of a woman shooting a Chanel bag. You are able to take 3 postcards and see the pictorial process on how a Chanel bag is made. There was a “wish” tree there, where one could write with a pencil on a tag their wish and tie it on the tree. A recent Hong Kong visitor informed me that the wish tree was originally made for the Japanese.

At the end of the tour you were giving a large black and white book of photographs you could hang up as posters, most were shot by Karl Lagerfield himself. You can take the time to fill out a suggestions card if you want. But overall Chanel doesn’t care if you go or not, afterall its Chanel, and she’s got a world tour. She heads off to London, Moscow and of course Paris.
